U.S. Congressman John Barrow (GA-12) today announced that the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) Economic Opportunity Authority (EOA) would receive a $10,941,160 grant from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The grant will allow the CSRA EOA to provide Head Start services to children and families residing in Bulloch, Burke, Columbia, Emanuel, Lincoln, Jenkins, Jefferson, McDuffie, Richmond, Screven, and Warren Counties.

"The Head Start program ensures that every child has the opportunity to succeed in school," said Congressman Barrow. "I congratulate the CSRA EOA for submitting a winning application, and I look forward to working with them to make sure they get the resources they need to make sure all of our children get a head start on school."

Ernestine P. Smith, Head Start Director, of CSRA EOA, Inc. stated that, "The Board of Directors, Policy Council, Children, Parents, and Staff of the CSRA are excited to continue providing high quality services for children and their families. We are thrilled to provide school readiness opportunities for our participants. Special thanks to supporters for making this possible."

According to the Office of the Administration for Children and Families, head Start promotes the school readiness of young children from low-income families through agencies in their local community. Head Start was most recently reauthorized in 2007, under the George W. Bush administration. Head Start has served over 30 million children since 1965, growing from an eight-week demonstration project to include full day/year services and many program options.
